Next ExhibitioNext Exhibition Edo Beauties From Friday 2 October 2009 to Thursday 29 October 2009 At museo casa de los tiros de granada (House Museum of Los Tiros) (Pavaneras 19, 18009 Granada Tel 958 22 10 72) http://www.juntadeandalucia.es/cultura/museos/MCTGR/?lng=en Edo Beauties on the occasion of “in m useo casa de los tiros de Granada” exhibition It is an honor to hold Ukiyo-e exhibition in Granada, the warm and beautiful city of Spain. Edo period (1603-1867) is a division of Japanese history. Even in the world history, it is rare to find a single government to rule the country for such a long time. Edo period began after the Civil War period. And in its long lasting period of peace, the samurai class lost influence, and commoners like shonin (merchants) became the dominant class of Japanese society: their wisdom created various new types of entertainment, and a broad mass culture flourished. Sakoku policy (the closure of the country towards the outside world) was imposed by the government around 1630. From the artistic perspective, it was effective. The policy helped the new culture develop into established culture that was unique to Japan. The Edo cultural arts include Cha-no-yu (tea ceremony), Noh (performing art), Kabuki (theater play), and Ukiyo-e that are considered traditional Japanese cultural arts today. Under such background, Ukiyo-e vividly depicted emotions, lifestyles and trends of people in Edo period, and it has been highly appreciated by the art lovers all over the world. There are two types of Ukiyo-e: nikuhitsu-ga (original paintings) and han-ga (woodblock prints). Original paintings were painted directly on paper or silk by a single artist from the beginning to the end for the order received by a particular client. On the other hand, woodblock prints were mass-produced for commoners. Woodblock print was the product of a collaborative process involving publisher, artist, wood-carver and printer. Because of its advantage to realize mass publication, it spread as a medium of producing information magazines and articles for commoners. This exhibition is composed mainly of Bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) originals and woodblock printings of late Edo period (around 1800). I hope you will enjoy the exhibition by looking at the truly exquisite expressions in the original paintings, by seeing the differences between originals and woodblock, and by examining details of kimono (garment), obi (belt) geta (footwear) in the paintings and printings and find the beauty of Edo and Japan.
